Wide stirrup leathers are the latest trend to hit the equestrian world with a lot of benefits for the rider riding in them. So far I have only seen two brands selling these, the original company being — and Henry James Saddlery being the newest. The design of these stirrup leathers help to give the rider a secure leg which is ideal for showjumping and cross-country when a secure lower leg is needed, however they also benefit riders on the flag and those who compete in dressage. From reading other people’s reviews before buying from both the different brands I found many riders who suffer from hip/pelvis issues and ankle issues have benefited hugely from the use of these wider stirrup leathers.

My Experience…

Today (28th of February) was my first time riding in these stirrup leathers and wow, I really could feel the difference in my leg position! To start with Dino was finding everything spooky for some reason which resulted in a near miss😂 for me but thanks to these stirrup leathers I hardly felt my legs move. Once he settled down a bit and I started to work him avian I could feel the difference, you can feel your feet are in a more forward position which keeps your knees facing forward which is something I’ve been working on for a little while now. I think this position helps to keep a more secure leg and with the help from these stirrup leathers it is achievable without constantly having to think out it. I can’t wait to have a jump in them! In fact I love them so much I might have to get another pair for Maisie’s saddle🙈

As for pains I don’t really suffer from pain in any of these areas which can be helped with the use of these stirrup leathers but I did feel really comfortable whilst riding, so can see how these can help.

The leather quality is gorgeous, they are super soft and flexible, no need to oil before the first ride although I did put them NAF leather balm on them before riding in them.

I also want to mention how fantastic Henry James Saddlery was as a company to deal with. I ordered from them on the 25th of February and the arrived on the 27th of February. I thought this was fantastic as it was only standard delivery, they dispatched them really quickly and are really good with keeping you up to date with your order. When they arrived and removed the out packaging they were beautiful wrapped in light brown paper with a Henry James Saddlery ribbon securing it all. I always like it when companies take the time to pack goods nicely.

Pros…

  • relieves hip and pelvis pain
  • relieves ankle pain
  • Gives a more secure lower leg position
  • The wide design makes it easier to find the stirrup if you lose it whilst riding
  • Soft, supple leather
  • Supporting whilst riding
  • Well made
  • Cheaper than other wide stirrup leathers on the market

Cons…

I honestly can’t find a fault with these! I’m so impressed as I didn’t think they’d really make that big of difference but they really do!!

Overall I think these are a great investment for any rider, especially those who compete or jump a lot. I also think they would be ideal for riders who train young horses as they give you more security in the saddle than standard stirrup leathers for those “Oh sh** moments”.🤭 I couldn’t fault them on quality or performance and can 100% say I will be buying another pair for my other horses saddle! The company was also really lovely to deal with and put in the extra effort of wrapping them up beautifully. If you’re looking for any leather work Henry James Saddlery is definitely worth a look!
