Over the years I’ve used many different grooming items which have been designed for shedding including curry combs, blades and blocks but one of my favourite has to be the Sleek-eze Shedding Blade. I picked up mine at a local tack shop.

They come in two sizes, the larger being for horses and the smaller one for dogs but the smaller one is ideal for smaller ponies or smaller areas such as the upper leg or by the ears when a bigger tool is more difficult to use. They strip all the loose and dead hair from your coat with ease as well as some of the grease that has built up in the coat during the winter.

I started off with an unbrushed horse to see how well this product really work and see the full effect. It work really well! It removed so much dead hair from Dino which I didn’t even think needed to come off, with him being a thoroughbred he has a really fine coat anyway. Not only did it get all the old hair out of his coat it also removed some dried mud that was in his coat.

To get the best finish after using the Sleek-eze blade I used a flick brush to remove the hair and grease that had been brought to the surface of his coat. The difference in his coat after use was amazing, you could easily see where his summer coat was starting to come through.

The blade also came in handy on my other horses. Two of them being native types with very thick winter coats that take a lot of getting rid of and the other being a cob type who also takes forever to shed.

Pros…

• Easy and comfortable to use
• Stylish design that will fit in with any grooming kit
• Makes removing dead hair quick and easy
• fairly inexpensive compared to similar shedding blades on the market

Cons…

• May not suit sensitive horses
• More sizes would be a good addition
• Blade will ware in time and unlike other ones similar in design you can not buy a replacement blade

To conclude the Sleek-eze shedding blade performs really well making shedding season easy to deal with. Personal I found my horse took a lot less time to shed compared to other years meaning I was able to see their gorgeous summer coats much quicker 😍 I’ve been using it loads recently to try to get as much of Maisie’s winter coat out before our working hunter championship show later this month. I can already see a huge change in her coat!

If you don’t already have a shedding blade in your grooming kit I’d really urge you to pick one of these up. I personally much prefer the Sleek-eze to any other blade I have used based on the results I’ve seen on my own horses.
