The Limo Bits by Makebe have been something that I’ve looked at a few times since they released them a few years ago. I think for me the coloured rubber was a big eye catcher😂 However I found a bit more information on them and decided it was something I’d quite like to try one if not both my horses in at some point to see how they would work in it. I ordered the snaffle in Burgundy which is the softer rubber for Maisie to have a go in. However there are loads of different bits to choose from if you need something with a bit more pressure and they all come in the two types of rubber soft or hard.

The bits are really nicely made with a lot of consideration for the horses mouth. The rubber is very flexible and looks like it would be easy for the horse to find a comfortable position for it to sit in their mouth. I really liked this as some rubber bits can feel quite ridgid depending on the material used to manufacture. The ends have almost built in bit rings on them so that there is no pinching in the corners of the mouth.
My Experience…
From the first time I used this bit I felt an immediate difference in Maisie mouth. I felt I had a much better feeling in her mouth, her contact improved, she was more accepting and she was much more responsive as a result. Throughout use she has just got better an better! She now is working in a much better way and her outline is coming along. I am doing things which before I couldn’t get her to do (I know there may be other factors causing this).
I always thought Maisie was fine in traditional bits but I would often have to swap and change. She would also get quite strong which I now think was due to her not totally accepting the bits I was previously using. I now no longer have the feeling she is fighting the bit or getting strong. She even jumps in this simple bit with the exact same amount of control as when we do flatwork.

Dino was also really accepting of this bit (those who have seen my Instagram will know how bad Dino is with bits), he’s only used it once so far as he’s been out of work recently. I am really interested to see how more work in this bit will affect Dino and how he will take the bit. He has a Bombers happy tongue but at the moment so it will be interesting to see if the Limo bits suite horses with large tongues like Dino.
Pros…
- Ideal for young horse
- Very flexible
- Ideal for sensitive horses
- A huge variety to choose from to suit your needs
- Approved by the FEI in showjumping and dressage
Cons…
- They are quite expensive starting at £80 (this was how much I paid for the style I got), but I believe they are well worth it based on the results I have gotten.
- At the time of writing this blog the bits are not British Dressage (BD) legal but hopefully with time they will be accepted
I really love how much this bit has completely transformed Maisie’s was of going. There’s things we have struggled with for years which she has picked up so quickly now that she is in a bit that she finds comfortable and therefore understands my aids better.
I think anyone who is struggling to find a bit that their horse fully accepts should definitely give the Makebe Limo bits ago. There are loads of different types to try and if you are at all unsure about what to go for I’d recommend asking Makebe Boutique UK or Makebe themselves. I found Makebe Boutique UK extremely helpful with the questions I had to ask so I’m sure they’ll be able to help you out if you are unsure which bit from he range will be most beneficial for your horse.
